Tea Leaf Salad | Burma Superstar! | San Francisco, California
Oh Burma Superstar, a classic example of the “omg so good, you must eat here when you visit the bay area” joint — ridiculous waits for a table (over two hours during peak times, really?), semi hole in the wall credit (rare to find a Burmese joint, but obviously ain’t going to win any authentic Burmese food awards), and an impressive Yelp rating (solid 4 stars out of 1600+ reviews as of June 2009). One of the most popular dishes is the Tea Leaf Salad, which is prepared with imported Burmese tea leaves, tomatoes, lettuce, dried shrimp, fried garlic, sesame seeds, peanuts, and split yellow peas. As with all Tea Leaf Salads, the fermented tea leaf taste may be overwhelming to some, but the tea leaves here are complimented with plenty of lettuce to help avoid any such overwhelming experiences. This dish is a indicative of the majority of items on the menu and strays away from the typical dining rule of easing your way into flavors during your meal — this salad is a bold, fun, and full of texture.
