I want to make a point to say that I do not participate in the often heated rivalry between SoCal and Bay Area folks over Mexican food. Just because I hail from south San Diego, I don’t think that I have some superior palette when it comes to Mexican food nor do I think that the Bay Area lacks good Mexican food. However I do not agree with the masses of SF residents that rave and rejoice over Cancun Taqueria and El Farolito — while I understand these joints’ late night appeal, I haven’t tasted a single flavorful dish at either joint, whether sober or drunk.
But I have found flavorful Mexican dishes elsewhere in the Bay Area, such as the best torta I have ever eaten from Tortas Los Picudos. This joint focuses on tortas only and does it hella well. The Fried Pork Torta is my torta of choice. The bread is flat pressed and evenly toasted. The shredded pork is tender, plentiful and just damn looks tasty. Combined with fresh slices of guacamole and red onions, this torta melts in your mouth.
