Chef’s Choice Lunch Special | Eiji | San Francisco, California
Eiji is a no frills maybe 25 people max capacity Japanese joint that prides itself on actual Japanese characteristics — authenthic Japanese cuisine (you won’t find no California or Shrimp Tempura rolls here!), small Japanese staff (just Eiji the Japanese chef and Hidemi the lovely Japanese hostess), and limited open hours (lunch is served 11:30-1:45pm and dinner is served 5:30 to 9:45pm Tuesday through Sunday).
Eiji, the chef, is a boss. He knows his selection of fish and homemade silken tofu is quality and doens’t seem to care about maximizing business opportunity with fancy gimicks. The menu remains short and a must order is the Chef’s choice lunch special. For $12, you get a pleasant bowl of miso soup, a tekka (tuna) roll, and Eiji’s colorful selection of nigiri. It is obvious that Eiji truly understands the importance serving raw fish at the right temperature and clean cutting techniques for sharp presentation. This deal is an absolute steal and even more important, consistently fresh everytime I order it.
